The Allied Masonic Degrees, or AMD, can be traced to Brother J. Raymond Shute II. The AMD had existed in America since 1892, but laid dormant until the 1930's. Upon permission of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland, Brother Shute conferred the Excellent Master Degree upon 200 Royal Arch Masons in Asheville, NC, on May 12, 1931. The AMD is the largest of the York Rite invitational bodies. It confers eleven degrees and is only open to Royal Arch Masons, and is restricted to local councils of twenty-seven members.
