The use of a stone ashlar in the degrees of Freemasonry is to symbolize the journey that we as men and Masons undertake in search of perfection. By use of the tools and implements of Masonry, we learn how to perfect our thoughts and actions; thus symbolically transforming the rough ashlar into the perfectly square ashlar.
